Palega Park improvements ready to begin
My four year old son cannot wait. We live right next to the large Palega Park right in the middle of the lower part of Portola. Over the past four years the city has been working on a plan to upgrade and improve the entire park and work finally starts on Wednesday 14th march 2012. When I contacted the project manager, Toks Ajike, she said “We are looking forward to this project, I have been working on it for the past 4 years, as you can tell I am very eager to realize the proposed improvements. It is going to be a great place to be.”. I agree, and the renovation of this park was one of the main reasons we decided to move into the area.Wednesday 7th March is the groundbreaking of the project where at 11am there will be a ceremony with the city, contractors and general public to see the start of what will be about 14 months of work starting on March 12.
Money for the park improvements came from the Clean Parks Bond of 2008 and the larget bond was awarded to the Portola for the Palega park, a sum of around $21.1 million. The latest information can be found in the project document at the city website. I asked Toks for further information about the improvements and she said;
The scope of work for the project includes extensive interior and exterior renovations to the gymnasium, offices and program rooms. The building also includes a 3200 square feet addition steel frame addition construction , floor to ceiling glazing and projecting canopy to delineate the new entrance on Felton Street. The existing building will be fully ADA accessible. All new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm, telecommunications will be replaced. Outdoor improvements includes the sports field and courts, concrete and asphalt work, site furnishings and play equipment, planting and new irrigation throughout. The LEED performance goal is for a Silver certification.
