A bad day for gophers in Palega Park

This morning my whole family decided to join many others who walk around Palega Park every day for a bit of fresh air and exercise. The park is undergoing massive renovations, and as we watched the big CATs slowly level earth across the entire park, we saw many new gopher holes appear. Poor guys are having to pack bags and get outa town.

Unfortunately a few may end their days as the digging equipment ploughs through their tunnels. But this morning we saw another predator which we didn’t expect. Two very large and very hungry Egret’s were roaming the grass. We actually saw one successfully catch a gopher! These huge, tall birds were creeping very slowly, keeping a keen eye out for any little rodents they could get for breakfast. Then suddenly, one would dart quickly to the ground and grab a gopher.

[Update] A few days after posting this article, I did manage to catch an Egret with a gopher for breakfast!
