Senior Scam Stopper Seminar

Want a chance to meet our local state senator Leland Yee? Well, we’ve just been informed about an event organized in conjunction with Portola Family Connections (PFC) the senator will be attending. A range of experts are coming together to advise and aid the elderly in our neighborhood, it is called the Senior Scam Stopper Seminar. It is aimed at helping seniors to avoid being the victim of financial abuse, consumer fraud and identity theft. The experts presenting are from many city, state and federal agencies such as the Department of Consumer Affairs, Department of Insurance and San Francisco Police Department.

Attendees in particular are Neil O’Farrell, founder of the Identity Theft Council and Helen Karr, senior crime specialist from the district attorney’s office. Mr. O’Farrell will be talking about how to identify the latest in scams, usually received via email and often targeting less internet-savvy seniors. In 2005, Ms. Karr was part of creating state legislation to permanently make the month of May “Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month”.

I asked senator Yee how he felt about the issue of the elderly and how they cope with the rapid progress of our communication technologies like the Internet. He said:

Senator Leland Yee

“As we have unfortunately seen for years, there are people out there that will take advantage of the most vulnerable among us.  As scams and technology continuously become more sophisticated, it is imperative that we work to prevent elder financial abuse and consumer fraud by empowering seniors, their families and caregivers with the tools and resources needed to stop elder financial abuse once and for all. While May is Elder and Adult Dependent Abuse Awareness Month, it is critical we work year-round with community, experts and state and local agencies to reduce and prevent elder financial abuse. Our Senior Scam Stopper Seminar will bring these groups together in one place so we can continue to fight against scams perpetuated on those that deserve respect and dignity.”

As well as partnering with the PFC, Senior Action Network and the Neighborhood Vision Project are assisting with the seminar. Not only an educational event for our elders in Portola but also a great community event. So if you wish to attend, the details are:
