You may, or may not, be familiar with efforts to improve the appeal of our neighborhood. The fact two major freeways (ca101 and I-280) border the Portola means the intersection of these freeways at the North East side isn’t the prettiest part of land in the city.

However, there is constant work to improve these areas and make them more attractive. The latest project is to hang 48 pieces of artwork along the fence that lines the entrance to San Bruno Avenue. These large wooden panels have been created and painted by local residents and this weekend one of the project organizers, Reanna Tong, is asking for help to hang theĀ art panels. You may have noticed that a brand new fence has been installed around the Caltrans yard, this was done in preparation for the installation of these panels. Reanna’s request for help is below…

Hello neighbors!

Hope you all haven’t forgotten about the beautiful panels that many of you worked so hard on! If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, look at the attached images that will hopefully jog your memory. These 48 panels (4′ wide X 5-6″ high) have been waiting to be installed on the fences surrounding the Caltrans yard at San Bruno Ave. and Alemany and that moment is finally here! We’ll be installing 30 of these panels on October 12th!

If anyone is available on Saturday, October 12th, please consider coming out to volunteer and put some of these panels up. We will need around 15 volunteers to help with the following:

  • Transport panels and 2×4’s used for mounting from a neighbor’s house down to Caltrans site at 8AM
  • Use saws to cut 2×4’s down to size, pre-drill holes into 2×4’s and panels
  • Help with the installation of panels (around 10AM)

We’re also going to need some help gathering the following equipment to proceed with the installation:

  • Trucks to transport panels and 2×4’s saw to cut the 2×4’s
  • Drill bits and drills (3-4 would be nice). The type of screw we are using to mount requires a T30 driver bit
  • Safety vests and goggles

If everything goes smoothly, we should be able to get the 30 panels up within 4-5 hours. Lunch will be provided! Contact me at 415-290-7385 or [email protected] if you are available to help out of have any questions.

The art is going to look amazing, so please, if you have a free few hours on Saturday morning, call Reanna and help out. Below are some pictures of the panels ready to be installed…

As one of the painters of some of the panels, I love that these historical murals are finally going to be hung. Yea! I want to add that on the same day, Sat,Oct 12 from 2-5 at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park will be an amazing concert including three bands – The Titan Ups (Rock Steady and Early Reggae), Eddie Neon Project (Jazz, Soul and Blues), and Sweet Felony (Alternative Country). Wow, what a line-up and FREE! See McLarenParkCollaborative facebook page for more info.
