Happy New Year Portola!  To celebrate, the New Year’s baby has brought us all a gift in the form of Portola’s first (as far as I know) brick & mortar art space – we of course recognize Moving Art House as our first art space in the growing Portola art scene…yes, two spaces means we now have a scene.

This Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., local artists Lisa Magruder and Arthur Koch will open the doors to their joint space at 150 Silliman St.   The celebration will include works from several local artists, refreshments, “art related activities” for all ages and live music from at least three bands including the group that lives above the studio.  Arthur even mentioned leashed chickens with little diapers but this was after we all split a bottle of wine so I won’t hold him to it but I will keep my fingers crossed.

Lisa who is a Portola resident of almost 2 years, relocated from Folsom where she was named “Folsom’s Favorite Artist” until they found out she had moved to San Francisco.  Their loss is apparently our gain.  Her business, Frame Art Studio, will offer custom framing services with a wide variety of glass, mounting and frame options.  Eventually she plans to include vintage frames for those looking to find something a little different.  Arthur, who is a Portola resident of over 22 years, has been showing his paintings and photography at the Revolution Cafe in the Mission for a number of years.  He will offer his photography services at this location which includes everything from events and portraits to commercial work.  Both his and Lisa’s artwork will be on display and for sale in the gallery section of the studio.

Together Lisa and Arthur, who have been partners for 5 and half years, hope the studio becomes a cultural resource for the larger Portola and San Francisco art community. Lisa will be offering art classes for children as young as preschool as well as workshops for adults such as wine and painting nights.  In addition to gallery space for their own work, they will also have a wall featuring local artists and they invite to the community to stop in to check out the ever changing exhibits.  As they settle into their new space, they also hope to host events and live performances, Arthur has even hinted at pulling out the grill and serving up some of his famous grilled Paella.
