Updated: Photos from opening of new Portola art studio

Update: Due to me rushing around over the weekend, I totally forgot to add in links to both Arthur and Lisa’s websites! Here they are. http://www.frameartstudio.com/ and http://www.arthurkoch.com/ We just got home after a fun few minutes spent at the new art studio at 150 Silliman St. The place was pretty busy when we arrived with probably …

portolART: Art Studio Grand Opening Saturday

Happy New Year Portola!  To celebrate, the New Year’s baby has brought us all a gift in the form of Portola’s first (as far as I know) brick & mortar art space – we of course recognize Moving Art House as our first art space in the growing Portola art scene…yes, two spaces means we …

Portolans Star in Local Artist’s Citywide Project

San Francisco’s least known ‘hood and its residents still manage to make their mark in this crowded city and its vibrant art scene.  Starting this month, a Portola artist will have his work, which features many Portolans, displayed all over SF. Keep your eyes peeled for your friends and neighbors! Local artist Phillip Hua has …

Beautiful mosaic completed at the McNab Lake in McLaren Park

A few weeks ago many neighborhood volunteers completed the new mosaic that now curves around the back of McNab Lake in McLaren Park. The project was born from the Help McLaren Park community group who are constantly working to bring improvements and public art to the second largest park in San Francisco. The artwork was …

The Incredible San Francisco Artists’ Soapbox Derby

McLaren Park is an awesome place. But it’s awesomeness just increased significantly after the Planet watched the video below. In 1975, San Francisco artists built cars for a soap box derby in McLaren Park. They were given money ($250, probably around $1000 by today’s standards) to build their artistic creations which included one car featuring …

Glorious new artwork installed on Alemany Island

This morning I helped install many of the wonderful new painted panels along the entrance to San Bruno Avenue. These works of art were designed by Kate Connell and Oscar Melara. Volunteers from the Portola then spent many nights painting the pieces. This project has been led by Reanna Tong and after a lot of work …

Help Beautify the Portola this Saturday

You may, or may not, be familiar with efforts to improve the appeal of our neighborhood. The fact two major freeways (ca101 and I-280) border the Portola means the intersection of these freeways at the North East side isn’t the prettiest part of land in the city. However, there is constant work to improve these …

Beautiful sunset over the Portola

The entire city was witness to a superb sunset last night, unfortunately due to dinner time antics, I was unable to get out and use my good camera to capture the event. However, sticking my camera phone out of the window did seem a rather good compromise. Anyone in the neighborhood get any better shots? …
