The Incredible San Francisco Artists’ Soapbox Derby

McLaren Park is an awesome place. But it’s awesomeness just increased significantly after the Planet watched the video below. Glorious new artwork installed on Alemany Island

This morning I helped install many of the wonderful new painted panels along the entrance to San Bruno Avenue. These works of art were designed by Kate Connell and Oscar Melara. Volunteers from the Portola then spent many nights painting the pieces. This project has been led by Reanna Tong and after a lot of work …

Help Beautify the Portola this Saturday

However, there is constant work to improve these …

Beautiful sunset over the Portola

The entire city was witness to a superb sunset last night, unfortunately due to dinner time antics, I was unable to get out and use my good camera to capture the event. However, sticking my camera phone out of the window did seem a rather good compromise. Anyone in the neighborhood get any better shots? …

A regular reader of the blog and local Portolan, Stuart Gaffney, has just sent in some stunning pictures of the sun setting across our favorite McLaren Park. In Stuart’s own, poetic words… As the summer fog recedes, we’ve been enjoying the views and sunsets in McLaren Park more and more – the hilly terrain seems to …

People a Plenty at Park Play!

This weekend saw a free rendition of the famous Shakespeare play “Macbeth” by city bard addicts, SF Shakes. The performance was scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, but a city wide downpour rained off the Saturday event. However, as we often are in the Portola, Sunday was blessed with glorious sun and the Jerry Garcia …

Portola winds damage new art installation

It’s been less than a week since the wonderful new art installation was erected at Palega Park and the cruel San Francisco winds have already sent it back to Oakland for repairs. In the words of Blaine Merker, the artworks designer; “Zephyros’s upper fins were damaged in the high winds we had and we decided …
